Leicestershire’s Jim Allenby has sensationally thrown down the gauntlet in the race for this year’s Walter Lawrence Trophy with a 54-ball hundred. The 26-year-old, Australian-born all-rounder went on to make 110, which included 8 sixes and 7 fours, as the Leicestershire Foxes defeated the Nottinghamshire Outlaws in the T20 match at Grace Road, Leicester on June 3. To complete a memorable night for Allenby, who became only the second Leicestershire batsman to score a T20 century, he also took 3 for 21 in the Foxes 70-run victory.

Celebrating its 75th year, the Trophy, awarded for the fastest hundred of the season, is open to all domestic county competitions, with centuries scored in the Friends Provident Trophy (50-over format), NatWest Pro40 League (40-over format), Twenty20 Cup (20-over format) and the County Championship, all qualifying as well as Test Matches, One-Day Internationals and Twenty20 Internationals played in England. The winner will be presented with the Trophy and a cheque for £5,000 at a special end-of-season lunch in the Long Room at Lord’s.

The front runner for the Walter Lawrence Trophy award, of a silver medallion and prize of £1,000, for the highest score by a batsman from the six MCC Universities against one of the other five University Centres of Cricketing Excellence or against one of the first-class counties is 22-year-old Ryan Bishop of Cardiff UCCE. Opener Bishop, who was born in Johannesburg, scored 142 in the MCC Universities Championship match against Cambridge UCCE at Newport on June 16.
