    2003 Presentation Dinner at Lord’s

Damien Martyn, winner of the Walter Lawrence Trophy in 2003, received the Trophy and a cheque for £5,000 from Brian Thornton, Trustee of the award, at Headingley on the last day of the season, before Damien had to return to Australia the next day. On receiving the award, Damien said: “This was one of my best innings. Test Match hundreds are always special, but this one was definitely up there with them.”

A glittering Presentation Dinner was held in The Long Room at Lord’s on 30 September. Anthony McGrath, Captain of Yorkshire County Cricket Club, came down from Headingley with his Vice-Captain, Matthew Wood, to receive the Trophy on behalf of Damien Martyn from Matthew Fleming, last year’s winner.

Several past winners of the Trophy and many of the great and the good from the world of cricket attended the dinner, including; Charles Fry, President of MCC; Lord Alexander of Weedon, MCC Chairman; Colin Ingleby-Mackenzie, a past President of MCC and scorer of the fastest hundred in 1958; to name but a few.

Mark Lawrence of AON Limited, the supporters of the award, also made a charitable donation of £6,000 to the Lord’s Taverners. Richard Stilgoe, President of the Taverners, received the cheque on behalf of the charity, which does such sterling work to enhance the lives of so many young people in need of help.

After his acceptance speech, Richard rounded off a wonderful evening by accompanying Henry Olonga on the piano while he sang the moving anthem from ‘Chess’. The MCC Committee recently acknowledged Henry’s contribution to international cricket and particularly to cricket in his home country, Zimbabwe, by offering him Honorary Life membership of MCC, which he has now accepted.
